For mass spectroscopy charged molecules are accelerated in an electrical field. All particles run through the same field and therefore get the same kinetic energy. However the different masses will result in a characteristic spectrum of particle speeds which gives the possibility to make conclusions to the samples material composition. There are different methods to measure the speed. When the time of flight of the particles is measured, one speaks of "Time of Flight Spectroscopy" (TOF). Another possibility is to bend the particles trajectory in a magnetic field what will result in different flight paths which will be registrated by spatially distributed  detectors.
