Electrophoresis is a method of material analysis used in chemistry, biology or medicine, which is suitable particularly to examine proteins, amino acids or nucleic acids (genetic material: DNS or RNS). The materials which can be examined have to be charged electrically or split up into ions (charged molecules). After this they are embedded in a substrate and exposed to an electrical field. The particles will be moved by the electrostatic force with a defined drifting speed, which depends on the field strength, the characteristics of the substrate (viscosity, pore diameter), the particle radius and the ion charge. Thus with fixed field strength and substrate results a characteristic drifting speed for each molecule. If the field is switched on now a certain time and switched off then, a characteristic pattern will appear, which permits to distinguish from each other also complicated molecules . Besides the gel electrophoresis, where a gel is used as a substrate, also capillary electrophoresis is used, where the substrate is a electrolyte in a capillary. Because of the small volume the procedure is particularly suitable for the analysis of smallest amounts of material.
